                                                                            Wayanad - Magic becomes true

A perfect location for great adventure and healing of one’s mind, Wayanad can be described as the green paradise of India.  Enjoy an adventurous ascent through the Brahmagiri hills into the age-old Thirunelli temple or explore Idakkal cave, decorated with the paintings of the prehistoric times.  At the end of the day, visit any Aurvedic spas which abound in Wayanad to refresh your body after a strenuous, exciting exploration!

Wayanad derives its name from the word “Vayalnadu” meaning village of paddy fields.

Vedic kings ruled Wayanad during the ancient times.  Later on, it came under the reign of Pazhassi Raja dynasty of Kottayam.  After some time, Hyder, the ruler of Mysore invaded and conquered Wayanad.  Even though Tippu Sultan of Mysore restored Wayanad to the Pazhashi Raja, it came under the British rule with his treaty with them in his final years.

The British took measures to modernize the area understanding its strategic position in the land.  They built roads across the dangerous slopes and the plateau was opened up for the cultivation of cash crops including tea.

During the time of the formation of Kerala State, Wayanad became the part of Kannoor.  Later, south Wayanad was added to Kozhikode district.  In 1989, the north and south Wayanad was joined together to form the present district of Wayanad.

One among the most beautiful regions in the country, Wayanad is located at about 700 meters above the sea level.  A fertile, mountainous region, Wayanad is home for an exotic plant life.  An area decorated with tropical forests, this is a thriving market of cash crops and spices like coffee, cardamom etc.

Banasura Dam:

One among the greatest dams in India, this dam extends to a wide area, providing crystal clear water and refreshing the tourist’s mind with a serene beauty unique to the area.

Pazhassi Raja Tomb:

Located in Mananthavady in the district of Wayanad, this reveals the history of Pazhashiraja.  He was the first king to fight against the British.  Even though the British defeated him, they could not get him alive because he killed himself somewhere in the dense forest.  He was called the “lion of Kerala.”  Before his defeat to the British, he had made many disastrous onslaughts against the British with the assistance of the tribal people of the area.

Wayanad is a place well coupled with the rest of the country.  The nearest railway station to the place is Kozhikode.  However, the road transport is quite developed here.  Bus services are available to Wayanad on a daily basis.

Wayanad is located in the Western Ghats of Kerala.  This green paradise offers the tourists a variety of adventurous options like forest trekking, camping in the night, bird watching etc.  In an attempt to stay in par with the natural beauty of the land, there are resorts which allow you to stay in treetop houses.  This gives you the feel of the jungle.  The accommodations here are diverse.  Ranging from small bamboo huts to homes carefully built as perfect expressions of art, Wayanad provides accommodation for everyone.

Welcome to Wayanad, experience the magical effect of greenery and get excited with the thrilling adventures the mountains can offer!
