Mysore : The festive city of India
Mysore, Karnataka is famous for beautiful gardens and historical monuments. The city gets its name from Mahishasura, a Hindu demon. The word means the dwelling of Mahishasurra, originally “Mahisasuru” and the present one is its corrupted version.
Legend states that Mysore was ruled by the demon Mahishasura, a buffalo-headed monster. Gods and goddesses began to pray to guard them from the atrocities of the demon king. In response to their prayer, Goddess Parvathi incarnated as Chamundeshwari and killed him on the hilltop of Chamundi. Thus the name, Mysore and Chamundi hills was incorporated. It is believed that after the killing, the goddess stayed on the same hill. She is worshipped here with great fervor and devotion to this day.
