Jaipur: the treat of the Rajputs

Jaipur, known as the “pink city of India” is the capital of Rajasthan, a State in the northern India.  The row of magnificent forts, palaces and other buildings testify to the fact that Jaipur is indeed a pink city.

Jaipur is known to be the first best planned city in India constructed in Rajputana style.  It was founded in the year of 1872 by the then king of Rajputana, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.  The city is built based on the principles of Indian architecture.  Amber was the earlier capital of Rajasthan.  The lack of water and increasing population forced the king of the time to shift it to Jaipur, which he found to be ideal to get settled.  The construction of the city began in 1722 and was finished within the short time of four years.

The place got the name, “pink city” from the pink color painting applied on the buildings in 1853 to welcome the Prince of Wales.  Even today, there are buildings painted in pink color which is a real treat for the eyes of the onlookers.  Jaipur is home for a number of hospitals.  The important industries here are metal and marble.  The school of arts, which started in 1862 contributed greatly for the promotion of these industries in the city. The places like Hawa mahal and the city palace give us an insight into the architecture of the royal age.  Following is a short description of some of the tourist attractions in the area.

Jaigarh Fort:

This fort, also known as the “Victory fort” was built by king Sawai Jai Singh in 1726.  Initially it served as the royal treasury.  The fort consists of several gardens, armory etc.

City Palace:

It is a 7-storeyed building, a display of architecture in its perfection.  The building consists of a number of palaces, exotic gardens and a great courtyard.  The site is a combination of Rajasthani and Mogul architecture.

Chokhi Dhani:

This is a 5-star restaurant with exceptionally good Rajasthani food. Here, you can enjoy live dancers demonstrating their great talents in the company of great folk-music.

Tourists from the world around flock to the pink city to experience the royal splendor of Rajputanas displayed in the splendid forests and palaces here.  Besides, Jaipur is famous for great restaurants, ranging from the substandard ones to deluxe ones.  The hotels here can be classified into two:  Heritage hotels and luxury hotels.  Even the visitor with a tight budget is sure to find a reasonably priced restaurant which offers excellent service here.

Jaipur can be comfortably reached by road from New Delhi via National Highway-8 by a five hour road trip. By train, a narrow gauge railway connection can help you visit the place. Jaipur is also connected by air, from different parts of the country, readily.

Sightseeing over, you might be thinking of doing a little shopping here.  The place abounds with great shops offering high-quality handicrafts.  The busy markets like Nehru Bazaar and Bapu bazaars are just a few of the shops there offering you huge variety of products like precious stones and textile.

Welcome to Jaipur, treat your eyes with the royal splendor in its perfection here!
