Haridwar comes from collation of two words, ie- Hari refers to God and Dwar refers to gate. So, Haridwar stands to be a gate towards the God.

Haridwar is situated in state of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 314m from the sea level and spread around in 2400 square kilometres. As the name depicts, this place is famous for the pilgrims. The best time to visit this holy place is October to March. When a traveller witnesses a visit to Haridwar, he or she can get a true flavour of India’s rich culture and civilization. Since ancient times, Haridwar is also known by other names such as Mayapuri, Kapilsthan etc.

 
                                        

When you visit Haridwar, you may further go to some nearby holy places named as Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath. All the above places add the experience of Indian mythology and gives a great peace to the mind. Haridwar is also considered important form the aspect of first place where the pilgrims can come and take a dip in the holy Ganga River or River Ganges. The river is the soul of the city. There is also a belief that one who takes a dip in River Ganges achieves salvation.

Due to the excellent connectivity by road and rail links, Haridwar is considered to be an excellent place to visit with family. Being an integral part of Indian mythology, one may witness a lot of festivals during the whole year. The Kumbh Mela, is a festival which comes after every 12 years brings a lot of travellers for the dip. The famous prayer or aarti of River Ganges in the evening brings a scenic beauty to the banks of River Ganges. During this time spiritual offerings are made to the River Ganges in order to please the River Goddess. River Ganges is considered to be a mother of all the people around it and follow the Hindu faith of religion.
